Friday Fives: Add copper in your home

About a year ago, I think my love for copper really began, I became a little overboard with it too. So I have created a post of how to add copper into your home.. BUT I would not advise adding absolutely everything yo see here into your home as you do not want a copper overload. Little touches of it here and there can make a room a little bit more fancy!

I hope you Enjoy!

How to..BURN IT!

To counteract my previous beach post of light woods, I wanted to show how you can do the total opposite to your home and still create a a raw, unique feel to a room or house! The term charred wood is also referred to "Shou-Sugi-Ban" which is Japanese. It literally translates to "burnt cedar board".  It can be quite an expensive bit of work if you would like to cover your entire home or fill every room. Also, like anything that includes a lot of technique, I would definitely seek advice and help from a professional as burning wood may seem easy but you do not want to go too far!

I have included some of the main ways you can incorporate charred wood into your home. Such as, Cladding your a section of the exterior of your home. I think charring works really well when you have something to contrast it with. Such as the masonry in the top image. But also it has become popular just doing one floor of a home so you may have the bottom section rendered with the top cladded in charred wood to give a contrast to a particular section of a home. Bringing it into the house also works well interns of feature walls. I think what I like about it most compared to paint of wallpaper is that it give this beautiful, natural texture to a wall that you just wouldn't get from paint/paper.  I wasn't able to find too much pieces of furniture, but I'm sure if you have a research and find somebody to make you a one of piece, it can create a really powerful focal point to a room.

I hope this inspired you to possible add wood into your home in a way you didn't imagine!

Beach Days

East Wittering - Chichester
West Wittering - Chichester
East Wittering - Chichester
West Wittering - Chichester
Personally, my favourite beaches are in England. There is just something different about them compared to any other beach I've visited the world. I've listed two beaches here that are situated on the South Coast of England and are perfect beach to visit all year round. West Witterings is a perfect location to walk. If I'm taking my dog, I will usually park at West Witterings and then walk to East. They have some beautiful beach house along the front, lots currently being renovated and also get spots for holiday rentals!
Hengistbury Head - Bournemouth

Another beach I like to go to is Hengistbury Head. Its a really god day out as there is so much beach to see, and towards Muderford they have beautiful English beach huts along the front, which I am sure some can be rented out to stay. They're quite small but has the most perfect view right o the beach.

Friday Fives: Beach Vibes

After visiting the beach this week, I really wanted to recreate a beach house interior. It has always been a dream of mine to live by the beach, but the reality of a student kicked in and got me thinking of how I could make my current home feel a little bit closer to the beach.

I have included 5 really simple ways to give your home a more coastal feel. An easy starter would be to paint everything white, especially if you have any wooden or brick wall. Painting a light colour will easily brighten up the space, neutralising the entire room. This then gives you room a blank canvas to add simple textures from driftwood/wooden pieces of furniture mixed with rope decor. All in all hopefully giving your room a might more light and airy room, with hints of nautical features such as, striped rugs and beach prints, making it feel like your that little bit closer to the sand and sea!

I hope you enjoy!

How to... Survive your first year at Architecture School

After finishing my first year at Architecture School, I wanted to share some advice on preparing anybody starting their architecture course possibly in September. Obviously, this may differ from universities due to the specific course you might be doing, some more computer based and other more drawing but I have included a checklist to help you prepare!

I literally started my first day with a basic sketch pad and a pencil case. Unfortunately, my school didn't think to give us a heads up of what we might need to buy during summer, so it was a last might purchases in over priced store where if I knew before what I need, I could have save some money by ordering online. The checklist includes some of the things that helped me get through the first year of archi-torture!

Electronic needs:

1.  Laptop, either Mac or PC. Its always better to use your savings and invest in a laptop that will take you through your whole course. Don't settle for anything on the cheap as you might find yourself re-purchasing a new laptop sooner than you thought.

2. External Hard drive, I cannot recommend one enough. Storing all your files on here makes your Laptop run like its brand new.. It also helps programs such as Photoshop run faster!

LaCie 1TB Rugged Portable Hard drive - Thunderbolt and USB 3.0

3. A mouse.. I bought one at the beginning of the year as it was advised by tutors, supposedly making your auto cad life 100x easier, I found my trackpad on my laptop did me just fine. However, some of my friends swear by it and can't use these programs without it!

Magic Mouse 2

Model Making needs:

4. Desk Lamp
5. Cutting Mat
6. Scaled Ruler
7. T-Square
8. Cutting Knife
9. Super Glue
10. Mechanical Pencils
11. Measuring Tape
12. UHU
13. Set Squares
14. Adjustable Set Square

Portfolios:

15. Moleskine Sketchbook
16. Daler Rowney Layout Paper
17. Daler Rowney Heavyweight Cartridge Pad
18. Telescope Tube
19. A2 Portfolio

Reading:

Many universities will give you some sort of reading list before you start. Here are some that were on mine.
20. Delirious New York: A Retroactive Manifesto for Manhattan
21. Case Study Houses
22. Thomas Heatherwick Making
23. 101 things I learned in Architecture School
24. S,M,L,XL
25. Zaha Hadid completed works
26. Modern Architecture: A critical history
27. Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture

Programs:

Programs such as Photoshop be a pretty pricey subscription so make sure you get a good student bundle that includes what you need!
28. Adobe Illustrator
29. Adobe InDesign
30. Adobe Photoshop
31. AutoCad
32. Rhino

I hope this helps anybody preparing for University in September...Let me know if you have any other suggestions I might have missed.. Good luck!

Pinning from Pinterest: Cille Grut

by Chris Tonnesen for Elle Decor

One of my favourite things to do is spend countless hours on Pinterest. I get so inspired by being able search though all the beautiful home interiors and keeping snippets of what I like in a board, preparing me for when I finally own my own home.

As I am currently a student, with no actual experience of designing a persons home, I have decided to create a "Pinning from Pinterest" series. Something I will post once a week, where I find my favourite designs, and create a collage of furniture, inspired by the picture with my own twist. I am well aware I have not an Interior Designer, as the pieces I may put together may not be to your liking which is fine.

The image below is by Danish interior stylist, Cille Grut.  I love how the walls give a contrast in chart by the uses of colour. The darker grey perceives a much more contemporary feel with the gallery wall. Whereas, the lighter colour grey highlights the beautiful periodic features which makes the space feel homely. I took inspiration from all the furniture within the image. I really like the 3 different chairs with all different material. The yellow chair is the collage is a shape and design I think could work really well within the space if upholstered in a botanical fabric. Tying in the grey's and browns of the room, giving a pop of colour to transition into the darker side of the room.
There's a mixture of hardware within the room, the chrome giving the space a more modern feel, then contrasting with the wood hardware from the couch to tie into the brown leather seats. I wanted the tie in all the hardware and design to make it not seem random.  Such as, I kept the design from the coffee table to match the footstool, but then made sure it tied in with the same colour of the couch.

Here is a list of all the images I used to put together the collage:
1. Brown Leather Armchair
2. Rug
3. Footstool
4. Couch
5. Side table
6. Side table ornament
5. Coffee table
6. Coffee table vases
7. Book cabinet
8. Book cabinet light
9. Yellow chair
10. Floor lamp
11. Picture frames

I hope this helps anybody renovating a home!

TRAVEL TUESDAY: WHY YOU SHOULD VISIT THE BROAD ON YOUR DAY OFF?

The “veil and the vault” arguably is the perfect description for the concept and design of this building. The veil is a white exoskeleton that covers the exterior walls and roof, made from 2,500 fibreglass- reinforced concrete elements, allowing daylight to gently pass through.

The museum is located on Grand Avenue in downtown LA, across the street from Frank Gehry's Walt Disney Concert Hall. However, during my visit I did not find that the Broad’s design was intentionally trying to mimic or compete with Gehry’s curvature, if anything, it did the opposite.

Once entering, you find yourself in a completely unexpected cave like lobby. The interior almost changes any perception of what you thought the interior would be like, judging from the outside. The galleries are located on the first and third floor, connected via an escalator up through the vault which houses the storage of the gallery.

A stair case wraps around the elevator which transports you back to the first floor, Windows are punched into the central mass to enable visitors to peer into the storage. This was particularly for memory interesting then the gallery itself.

I visited the museum back in March this year, and it was still a very popular place to visit even on a weekday, so I would recommend getting there possibly early morning if you do not want to wait. I hope you enjoyed this post and its inspired you to go to the museum!

Why I Started?

So, I basically wanted to include an in-depth introduction at the early stages of this whole blogging thing to let any potential and future reader know a little bit about the person behind this blog. My names Ellie Cullen and I am currently studying to be an Architect at the Architectural Association, London. Getting into the school was a sort of pinch me moment but it didn't come easy.

Throughout school and collage, I was a student getting average grades in all my academic classes but then hitting the higher grades in all the creative classes. Such as, Art, Graphic Design, Photography and more. It always became apparent to me that I wanted to do something creative within my career but I was always unsure. I always had a slight obsession with anything to do with interior design or house renovations.

When applying to Universities, it wasn't as smooth sailing as I had hoped. Most of my friends had a list as long as there arm of all the Universities they wanted to apply to. But, mine was just one, the AA school. Of course, any tutors looked at me like I had no idea and wasn't setting my self up in a good position. Many comments were made that I wouldn't get into this school, due to its prestigious status, my grades and lack of any architecture experience gave them the impression I wasn't capable. The night before my interview, I woke up with a painful throat infection, I hadn't been sick the entire year until the night before one of the most important days. Some how, I managed to talk / cough / talk some more / lose my voice / talk through my interview, enough to get into the school! I was so happy, even so I printed out my acceptance letter and put it up in my studio space in my collage just to make sure all the tutors that didn't have a lot of faith, knew about the good news! (a heads up for anybody going through the university application process, don't let anybody say you can't do anything.... prove 'em wrong!)

After completing my first year now at the AA school, I feel some what anxious about my future. I passed the first year constantly comparing myself to others, with the lack of confidence in the back of my mind of previous tutors telling me I'm not good enough. I think its something i've found really difficult to get over. I am 100% sure that there is no other degree I would rather be doing than Architecture. So thats a good start. But its the confidence I wanted to work on. So...."ARCHITECTS INTEREST" was born. A platform which I could share my interests and inspiration with others, to try and help at least one person potentially in my shoes. This isn't a professional website where I can share my many years of experience and knowledge in the given topics, because I don't have that yet. Its a place I want to share what I get inspired by, meaning if thats through artwork or travelling somewhere, by sharing my experience I hope to influence somebody else.

I would really appreciate any feedback or things to look out for in this blogger world as its pretty new to me -- ellie_cullen@hotmailco.uk    or leave a comment below!

Thank you,

Ellie
